Silk vs. Viscose Rugs: What You Need to Know Before Buying
We get a lot of calls about “silk” rugs that don’t behave like silk. Often, they’re viscose—a fibre that mimics silk’s shine but lacks its durability. If you’re thinking of buying a rug and can’t decide between silk and viscose, read this first.
What’s the Difference?
Silk is a natural protein fibre, spun by silkworms and prized for its softness, sheen, and resilience.
Viscose (also called art silk, bamboo silk, or rayon) is a chemically processed cellulose fibre made from wood pulp.
Why It Matters
Durability: Silk is strong and can last for generations. Viscose is weak and prone to “blooming” or crushing.
Care: Silk rugs can be washed by trained professionals. Viscose can’t always be cleaned effectively after a spill.
Price vs. Value: Viscose is cheaper up front but doesn’t hold its value. Some people pay silk prices for viscose unknowingly.
What We Recommend
If you already own a viscose rug, have it protected with our stain protection treatment. This gives you a better chance of managing spills before they cause permanent damage. And if you’re in the market for a rug? Choose silk or wool. Your future self—and your cleaner—will thank you.
