Rug Cleaning in Hampstead: The Most Popular Rugs We Clean in NW3 and Why They Need Special Care
The types of rug mentioned below, flatweave & tribal/nomadic are the ones which we come across most frequently in North London. Each have characteristics which require special attention.
Flatweaves Rugs
Flatweaves must be thoroughly dye tested before they are immersion washed. Many flatweave rugs contain unstable dyes which can bleed when wet. This is especially true if chemical dyes were used in the dying process. Before we clean any rug we always test the dyes thoroughly to make certain that the colours will remain stable during the wash process.
Because these rugs have no pile they do not hold much dry soil and so the dusting stage is minimal.
As Kilims are woven with no pile, the foundation is completely exposed and so these rugs are generally less durable. Our cleaning process is much more delicate to compensate.
Tribal,Village & Nomadic Rugs
Tribal/Nomadic rugs are usually made with coarser wool than fine city rugs and can have a very thick pile. Gabbeh rugs especially can be up to an inch thick. This means that incredible amounts of dry soil can build up in the foundation of the rug. The coarse wool used to make these types of rug also traps dry soil more effectively. Therefore with these types of rug we pay particular attention to dry soil removal.
Rugs like the Persian Gabbeh are made with natural dyes that are usually very stable. Also the thick pile protects the foundation of the rug making them very safe to wash with rotary brushes.
What About Other Types Of Natural Wool & Silk Rugs?
Of course we clean all types of Oriental rugs including Chinese, Turkish, Turkmen, Caucasian, Indian, Pakistani and Afghan to name a few. Every one is different and so each stage of the cleaning process has to be tailored to suit the type of rug being cleaned. The examples given above of Kilim and Tribal varieties illustrate how each rug presents its own advantages and challenges during cleaning. We have the experience to to be able to adapt our cleaning to your rug regardless of where it was made.
